About the School
The School of Biological Sciences at Mohamed Sathak College of Arts & Science brings together three decades of excellence in Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Microbiology under a single, unified academic home. Rooted in scientific rigour and driven by real-world relevance, the school prepares graduates who think across disciplines, work confidently in modern laboratories, and contribute meaningfully to India's rapidly growing life sciences sector.
Vision
To be a nationally recognised centre of biological sciences education and research — shaping scientifically grounded, ethically responsible graduates who advance human health, food security, and environmental sustainability through discovery and innovation.
Interdisciplinary Approach
Biology does not stop at departmental boundaries — and neither do we.
The School of Biological Sciences is built on the conviction that the most meaningful advances in science happen at intersections. Our students study molecules alongside microbes, genes alongside ecosystems, and laboratory chemistry alongside industrial biotechnology. Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Microbiology share common faculty, integrated laboratory sessions, and joint research projects — so a student of Microbiology understands fermentation biochemistry, and a student of Biochemistry is equally at home reading a microbial genomics paper.
This cross-disciplinary culture equips graduates with a versatility that single-discipline programmes simply cannot offer.
Research Ecosystem
Active inquiry is at the heart of every programme we offer.
Faculty across the school's three departments engage in research spanning cancer biology and natural product drug discovery, phytochemistry, cardiovascular and inflammatory disorders, microbial genomics, environmental microbiology, plant biotechnology and nanotechnology. Our laboratories house dedicated cell culture units, a microbial culture collection, and a full suite of modern analytical instruments — all available to undergraduate and postgraduate students from their first year.
Ph.D. programmes in Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Microbiology — recognised by the University of Madras — provide advanced scholars with the infrastructure, mentorship and publication record needed to pursue careers in academia, industry R&D and government research bodies.
Over 1,000 life sciences graduates trained since 1992. Research published in high-impact national and international journals.A degree from the School of Biological Sciences opens doors across India's most dynamic industries.
Our graduates move into pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality control, clinical diagnostic laboratories, hospital biochemistry, the food and beverage industry, environmental testing agencies, agricultural biotechnology, medical research institutions, and government science departments. Many pursue postgraduate studies at premier national institutions or go on to doctoral research in India and abroad.
The school maintains active internship partnerships with clinical laboratories, biotech firms and research institutes across Chennai — giving students real workplace exposure well before graduation.
"Why Biological Sciences at MSCAS?"
Three departments. One school. Boundless possibilities.
For over thirty years, Mohamed Sathak College has been one of Chennai's most trusted destinations for biological sciences education. We are among the rare institutions affiliated to the University of Madras that offers the complete spectrum — B.Sc., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. — across all three core life sciences disciplines under a single roof.
What sets us apart is not just what we teach, but how we teach it. Students learn in fully equipped, professionally managed laboratories. They attend seminars by eminent scientists from India and abroad. They publish research, win university ranks, and graduate into careers that matter. The School of Biological Sciences is not a stepping stone — it is a Launchpad.
At a glance:
- Established 1993 • UGC-recognised • University of Madras affiliated
- B.Sc. • M.Sc. • M.Phil. • Ph.D. across Biochemistry, Biotechnology & Microbiology
- Dedicated research laboratories with cell culture and instrumentation facilities
- Consistent university rank holders across all three disciplines
- ISO 9001:2015 certified institution
Industry-Focused Learning
Science learned in a classroom stays in a classroom. Science practised in the real world, changes careers.
The School of Biological Sciences has built structured industry engagement into every programme. Students undertake internships with clinical diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, food testing agencies and biotechnology firms across Chennai and the broader Tamil Nadu region.
Regular guest lectures by industry professionals bring the realities of the workplace into our seminar halls. Faculty-led collaborative research with external institutions ensures that what is taught in our classrooms reflects what is happening at the forefront of the industry right now.
Our students graduate not just with degrees, but with hands-on laboratory competency, industry exposure, and the professional confidence to contribute from day one of their careers.
Chennai Advantage
Location is a strategic asset — and Sholinganallur places us at the centre of Chennai's knowledge economy.
The MSCAS campus sits within one of Chennai's most dynamic IT and life sciences corridors. Hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturers, diagnostic laboratory chains, biotech start-ups and research institutes are all accessible within the city.
Students benefit from proximity to potential internship and placement employers, clinical exposure opportunities, and a city that is home to some of India's most active scientific talent.
Chennai is also a gateway to national research bodies, central government laboratories, and postgraduate institutions of national repute.
Studying biological sciences in Chennai, at an institution with thirty years of credibility in the field, is a distinctive advantage that our graduates carry into every interview room.
Placement Highlights
Our graduates are working across India's pharmaceutical, healthcare, diagnostics, agriculture and research sectors — in organisations that recognise the rigour of an MSCAS education.
Where our alumni work: Pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality assurance • Clinical diagnostic laboratories • Hospitals and healthcare institutions • Food safety and environmental testing agencies • Agricultural biotechnology companies • Government research departments • Academic institutions • Postgraduate and doctoral programmes at premier institutions
What our placement record reflects:
- Consistently high employment rates in biological sciences-related roles
- Graduates from all three disciplines placed in relevant, growth-oriented positions
- Strong alumni network connecting current students to industry opportunities
- Career counselling, soft skills training and interview preparation integrated into all programmes
"The training I received at MSCAS gave me the laboratory skills and the scientific confidence to step into my role at [Organisation] without hesitation." — SBS Alumni, Batch of [Year]
Chennai & OMR Advantage
Our campus sits on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) — Chennai's premier life sciences and technology corridor — and that address is one of the most practical advantages we offer every student.
Within minutes of our gates: pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisations, clinical diagnostic chains, nutraceutical firms and multi-speciality hospitals.
Dr Lal PathLabs, SRL Diagnostics, Metropolis, Gleneagles Global Hospital and Chettinad Health City are neighbours, not destinations.
Over 200 industry establishments line this single stretch — making internship access, industry exposure and employer connect a daily reality rather than a semester-end exercise.
Beyond OMR, Chennai's broader scientific ecosystem — Anna University, University of Madras, national research laboratories and government science departments — is fully accessible, supporting competitive examination preparation, collaborative research and higher studies.
For biological sciences students, OMR is not just an address. It is a career advantage built into the location.
Placement Highlights
The OMR Edge
Recruiters from OMR-based pharma companies, diagnostic labs and biotech firms visit MSCAS regularly — because the distance between their office and our placement cell is often under fifteen minutes.
Guest lecturers from the industry return as recruiters. Internship supervisors become the first to recommend our graduates for full-time roles.
Our graduates work across: Pharmaceutical manufacturing • Clinical diagnostics • Hospital biochemistry • Food & environmental testing • Agricultural biotechnology • CROs & research institutions • Government science departments • Academia
The result: a placement pipeline driven by proximity, relationship and reputation — built over three decades on one of India's most industry-dense roads.
